A memorandum on opening a branch of the Marche Polytechnic University was signed at Zhetysu University.

The university delegation led by the chairman of the board of Zhetysu University named after Ilyas Zhansugirov, Kuat Baymyrzaev, went on a business trip to the Italian Polytechnic University of Marche. Its goal is to establish cooperation between the two universities.

The heads of the university signed a memorandum on the implementation of the dual education program, joint scientific research, the exchange of teachers and students for academic mobility, as well as the opening of a branch of the Marche Polytechnic University at Zhetysu University.

Meeting with representatives of the internationalization project DAAD and Erasmus

Within the walls of Zhetysu University, meetings were held with representatives of the internationalization project DAAD, Erasmus  with Dr. Irina Darchia, Associate Professor of the Department of Classical Literature at Tbilisi State University (Georgia) and Professor of History and Politics of Higher Education, Director of the International Academy of Tuning Robert Wagenaar (Netherlands).

The guests shared their experience in the field of tuning education, where they reformed the system of universities around the world. This program was introduced in 2000 with the support of the European Commission, where respect for program diversity and autonomy are guidelines.

Thus, the unification of the educational process must pass through a system of competence, which specifies the learning objectives, stages of achieving goals and ensures the adequacy of the assessment of results.

 

Attracting international students

Implementation of international scientific projects

Zhetysu University named after Ilyas Zhansugurov is a participant in two international projects funded by the European Commission under the Horizon program:

  • “Central Asian Law: Legal Cultures and Business Environments in Central Asia”
  • "MOCCA: Multilevel Orders of Corruption in Central Asia"

1 project - “Central Asian Law: Legal Culture and Business Environment in Central Asia” is a 4-year research and training project funded by the European Commission H2020 MSCA-RISE program (project number 870647), which will last from 01/28/2020 to 02/28/2024. The goal of the project is to gain new knowledge and policy understanding of the relationships between legal culture, governance and the business environment in Central Asia. The project is being implemented by 14 institutions in 11 countries in Europe and Central Asia.

Project 2 - “MOCCA: Multi-Level Orders of Corruption in Central Asia” is a 4-year research and training project funded by the European Commission HORIZON-MSCA-2021-SE-01-01 – MSCA Staff Exchanges 2021 (project number 101085855), which is being implemented from 01.2023 to 31.12.2026. MOCCA is a research and staff exchange program designed to contribute to global and national efforts to understand and combat corruption by conducting interdisciplinary research into multi-level patterns of corruption in five post-Soviet Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan). The project is being implemented by 8 leading European universities and 9 partners working in the Central Asian region.

Opening of the Huawei ICT Academy

At Zhetysu University named after  I. Zhansugurov held the opening of the Huawei Academy for training in information and communication technologies on April 6, 2024. The event was attended by the Head of the Education Department of the Zhetysu region - Marat Suleimenov, Deputy Director of the Department of Digitalization and Automation of Public Services of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Ulan Nesipkaliev, teaching crew and university students, as well as representatives of Huawei. A memorandum of cooperation between the university and the company was signed by the Chairman of the Board-Rector of Zhetysu University named after. I. Zhansugurova - E. Buribaev and Deputy General Director of Huawei Technologies Kazakhstan Mr. Xu Hai.

External outgoing academic mobility

During the 2023-2024 academic year, as part of academic mobility, 29 students studied abroad in the USA, Spain, Poland, South Korea, Malaysia, and Turkey. (9 students studying at the expense of the republican budget, 20 students studying at the expense of extra-budgetary funds of the university).

Rating

In 2024, the university participated in the Times Higher Education world rankings for the first time. Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurova was included in the Times Higher Education ranking with the status of “reporter” along with 25 Kazakhstani universities. This status indicates that they are active participants in the ranking process. Universities with reporter status are marked and visible in the list of world universities, which was not the case before.

Today, the Times Higher Education World University Ranking is considered one of the three most authoritative international rankings. This year's ranking included 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions. The ranking uses 13 performance indicators, grouped in five areas:

  • Education (educational environment, university income);
  • Research work (reputation, research income, number of published scientific articles);
  • Citation (popularity of the university’s works among specialists in the relevant field);
  • Internationalization (foreign students, teachers, international cooperation);
  • Raising funds from industry (income from research for the real sector of the economy).

Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov took part in the world ranking UI GreenMetric World University Rankings in 2023. UI Green Metrics World University Ranking - a global rating of “environmentally friendly” universities. Compiled by the University of Indonesia (UI) since 2010. The founders of the ranking seek to attract the attention of the academic community to the need for a policy of sustainable environmental development to solve some environmental problems. The main rating criteria include indicators of energy consumption and saving, rational use of water resources, waste storage and recycling, use of environmentally friendly vehicles, and the area of green space on campus is assessed. Much attention in the ranking is paid to indicators of educational and scientific activity in this area.

  1. The environment of the academic building;
  2. Type of higher education institution;
  3. Number of educational buildings;
  4. Total area of the educational building (m2);
  5. Total area of the first floor in the main building (m2);
  6. Total area of the main building buildings (m2);
  7. Total area of "smart" buildings of the main building (m2) (smart buildings are aimed at saving energy);
  8. Water use on campus;
  9. Program to reduce paper and plastic use on campus;
  10. Transport system;
  11. Total parking area (m2);
  12. The total area of the academic building covered with vegetation in the form of a forest (%);
  13. Total area of the academic building covered with vegetation (%);
  14. The total area of the educational building for water absorption, excluding vegetation and plantings (%);
  15. Total number of students (full-time and part-time courses);
  16. Total number of teachers and administrative staff;
  17. University sustainability budget for one year;
  18. Existence of a university sustainability website.

In this ranking, the university took 872nd place out of 956 universities in the world. To participate in the ranking, an “EcoCampus” tab was created on the university’s website, which reflects scientific research and events dedicated to the study of the environment and sustainable development.

In the future, to participate in this rating, it is necessary to strengthen work in the following areas:

  • scientific publications on environmental issues and sustainable development;
  • conducting scientific events related to the environment and sustainable development;
  • creating student organizations related to the environment and sustainable development;
  • development of scientific startup projects with students related to the transport system, water use, waste management, environment and infrastructure, energy and climate change, education;
  • expansion of green space.

Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov annually takes part in the QS World University Ranking.

In 2022, the university was ranked among the 251-260 best universities in emerging Europe and Central Asia in the regional QS World University Rankings: Emerging Europe and Central Asia. This ranking included universities from the CIS countries, Ukraine, the Baltic countries, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Turkey and others.

Since 2023, the QS EECA ranking has been cancelled, and therefore the university participated in the QS Asia University Rankings. According to the results of this rating, Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov entered the top 651-700 best universities in Asia and the top 39 best universities in the CIS.

Also, Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov participates every year in the ranking of the best websites of universities in the world Ranking Web of Universities - Webometrics (Table 6). According to the results of the Webometrics ranking for July 2023, the university took 56th place in the ranking among Kazakhstani universities (132 universities in total), 20056th place in the world.(http://www.webometrics.info/en/Asia/Kazakstan).

This criterion (web influence) is one of the criteria in the regional QS ranking of universities in developing Europe and Central Asia.
