AP23485959 Climate-Induced Migration in Kazakhstan: Understanding Implications and Enhancing Adaptation Strategies

ABOUT THE SCIENTIFIC PROJECT:

  • Project name:Climate-Induced Migration in Kazakhstan: Understanding Implications and Enhancing Adaptation Strategies
  • The purpose of the project: The project aims to investigate the impact of climate change on migration in Kazakhstan and its associated law and policy implications, providing a comprehensive understanding of climate-induced migration dynamics.
  • Objectives:

1. Analyze Institutional and Legal Context: This task focuses on the analysis of Kazakhstan’s institutional and legal context, immigration laws, policies, and actual practices related to migration and climate change. It also involves a review of relevant literature and contextual interviews. Key indicators include the number of interviews with experts and the analysis of relevant documents and data. 2. Conduct Ethnographic Fieldwork and Surveys: This task involves undertaking a six-month ethnographic study in regions of Kazakhstan and, if funding permits, in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This fieldwork will include ethnographic observations, informal interviews, and semi-structured interviews. Measurable indicators for this task include the number of interviews conducted, data collected, and regions covered. 3. Explore Adaptive Strategies: The research aims to identify adaptive strategies employed by communities affected by climate change. This task involves longitudinal and comprehensive surveys with a focus on adaptive measures, including migration intentions. Measurable outcomes include data on adaptive behaviors and factors influencing these strategies.

The idea of the project: This project aims to create new theoretical and empirical knowledge about the impact of climate change on the migration landscape of Kazakhstan. There is a limited number of studies aimed at understanding how environmental factors indicative of climate change may influence family migration decisions in Central Asia. At the same time, the impact of these climate-related mobility on the demographic, economic and social development of Kazakhstan has been practically unexplored. The goal of this project is to fill the gap in academic knowledge creation and provide legal and policy recommendations for Kazakhstan to better prepare for the short- and long-term impacts of climate-related migration in the country. The project is interdisciplinary and is based on the experience of scientists in the fields of law, sociology, political science, economics, and ethnography.
