Candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerlan Turuspekov visited Zhetysu University as the keynote speaker at a workshop entitled “The Application of Speed Breeding in Modern Crop Improvement Programs”. The event was organized by the Institute of Biotechnology and Ecology at Zhetysu University under the framework of the scientific and technical program BR24992903, titled “Practical Implementation of Modern Molecular-Genetic, Physiological-Biochemical, Biotechnological Methods, and Digital Phenotyping in the Breeding of Economically Significant Agricultural Crops.”
Dr. Kanat Yermekbayev leads the Speed Breeding work package within the project. Dr. Zahid Mahmood also delivered a presentation on Speed Breeding and High-Throughput Phenotyping. Mr. Aibek Abduakassov, a junior research scientist at the Molecular Genetics and Genomics Laboratory of the Institute of Biotechnology and Ecology, shared insights and experiences from the establishment of a Speed Breeding Facility at Zhetysu University. Notably, this facility is the first of its kind in both Kazakhstan and the broader Central Asian region. The workshop was attended by agronomy students and faculty members, as well as researchers from the Institute of Biotechnology and Ecology at Zhetysu University and the Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology (Almaty, Kazakhstan).
