Recently, Alikhan Askerbai, a student of Zhetysu University named after Ilyas Zhansugurov, delivered an outstanding performance at the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship held in Manama, setting two new world records. He lifted 144 kg in the snatch and 172 kg in the clean and jerk—both results were officially registered as new world records among juniors. Competing in the 71 kg weight category, Alikhan earned a gold medal.
Today, Ermek Buribayev, Chairman of the Board and Rector of Zhetysu University, personally congratulated the young athlete and presented him with a grant certificate for free education at the university.
“We are proud to have a student-athlete like Alikhan, who has brought glory to our country. He made the flag of Kazakhstan soar high on the world stage and enhanced the image of our university. I am confident that in the future Alikhan will take part in the Olympic Games and become a champion. I wish the young athlete great success on this path and express my deep gratitude to his parents for raising a son who has become the pride of our nation,” — said the Rector.
Alikhan hails from the city of Sarkan and comes from a large, hardworking family. His mother introduced him to sports at the age of six by enrolling him in a weightlifting section at the local sports school. Weightlifting is a sport that demands willpower, persistence, endurance, and diligence — qualities that Alikhan’s coach, Nurbolat Zhamankyzov, quickly noticed in him. The coach devoted special attention to nurturing his talent, guiding him through numerous district, city, regional, and national competitions, where Alikhan gained valuable experience and honed his skills. Ultimately, he justified his coach’s trust by setting world records and achieving victory at the Asian Youth Championship.
At the ceremony held at Zhetysu University, Alikhan’s mother, Nurgul Serikbayeva, attended as an honored guest. She expressed sincere gratitude to the university’s rector, staff, faculty, and coaches for recognizing her son’s achievement and granting him the opportunity to study on a full scholarship for four years.
“I am a mother of many children, and all of them are engaged in sports. I am deeply touched by the support given to my son and the recognition of his victory through this educational grant. This is a tremendous help for our family. I believe that my son will continue to bring honor to both Zhetysu University and our country,” — she said.
Today, Alikhan Askerbai stands as an inspiring example for his peers, embodying dedication, perseverance, and the spirit of success.
