

Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov hosted an academic round table dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the ethnonym “Qazaq” and the introduction of the term “Kazakh Khanate” into scholarly discourse. The purpose of the event was to explore the historical heritage of the Kazakh people, to reflect on national identity, and to examine the significance of the terms “Qazaq” and “Kazakh Khanate” in academic and cultural contexts.
Prominent scholars from Kazakhstan took part in the round table, presenting their research and perspectives. The first speaker was Professor Duisenali Abdilashimuly, Doctor of Historical Sciences from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Japan), who delivered a presentation titled “The Kazakh Khanate and its written sources”.
Bereket Karibayev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, professor of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, presented a paper entitled “The Meaning and Content of the Ethnonym “Qazaq” and its historical evolution”. Yerzhan Bulanov, Candidate of Historical Sciences and lecturer at the Department of History and Social–Humanitarian Disciplines of Zhetysu University, delivered a presentation on the “Etymology of the Ethnonym “Qazaq”.
The event also brought together scholars from various universities across Kazakhstan, as well as Member of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Amandeldy Yesbay, who shared his views regarding the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the ethnonym “Qazaq” and the introduction of the term “Kazakh Khanate” into academic circulation.
During the round table, participants discussed key issues related to the role of historical terminology in society and its importance within academic research. They also identified promising directions for further study. Moreover, the event proved particularly valuable for students, master’s candidates, and young researchers, helping them gain scholarly experience, deepen their interest in historical research, and develop their skills in academic discussion.
