Research methods I: Participant observation / ethnographic fieldwork

On 08.08.2022, a training seminar for young scientists and doctoral students was held on the topic ” Research methods I: Participant observation / ethnographic fieldwork”.

The seminar was conducted by Peter Finke, Professor of the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies at the University of Zurich (Switzerland), invited as part of the academic mobility program.

The participants got acquainted with the concept of “included observation” and the methods of conducting ethnographic field work. The professor gave examples of research methods that he used in the study of the life and culture of the Mongols, Uzbeks, Kazakhs and other nationalities of Central Asia.

During the seminar, the participants were involved in the process and actively asked questions on topics of interest to them, and also had the opportunity to get acquainted with students and post-doctoral students of the University of Zurich who use the methods of included observation in their ethnographic practice in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
