The project “Sweet Rainbow” means “Sweet Rainbow” in translation. The essence of the project is to create a new variety of sweet corn with a larger amount of antioxidants, carotenes and vegetable protein. The presence of these elements is found in colored corn of Mexican varieties: Mexican black (saturated with antioxidants that strengthen the immune system and prevent cancer), Mexican red (with a larger volume of carotenes that improve vision) and Mexican white (characterized by a huge supply of vegetable protein without fats). The previous varieties are several times more useful from the usual sweet corn, however, they have a siliceous grain structure, and therefore are not sweet and hard, cause difficulties when eaten. The ultimate goal of the project is to obtain sweet and colored corn with useful elements for human health, based on the crossing of Mexican and our familiar varieties. The study of varieties and their genetics began in 2017. The research was conducted at the address Zhetysus region, Taldykorgan, Merekelik, 8th street, 45 d (private territory). In 2018, the first crosses began. In 2023, the first progenitors of colored sweet corn were obtained within the framework of Zhetysus University. During the crossing period for 6 years, it was revealed that when crossing colored corn (black, red, white, yellow), the basics of genetics work differently, there are no alternative dominant and recessive traits, and all grains have phenotypes, as a result of which cobs with grains of different colors appeared, in other words, Rainbow corn.
Project objective: The Sweet Rainbow project covers the following UN Sustainable Development Goals: 2-Elimination of hunger, based on the formation of a high yield of a new variety; 3-Good health and well-being, by saturating a new variety with elements useful to humans; 8-Decent work and economic growth, through the implementation of the Sweet Rainbow project new jobs will be created for the economic growth of the population; 12-Responsible consumption and production, with the help of the production of a domestic product that differs with greater utility in contrast to the usual product.
Expected results: The productivity of the new variety is 8-9 tons per 1 ha. Having a seasonal income of 6 million tng. The final result of the project is an updated version of a familiar product on the market with a wider range of benefits and applications. Additionally, by exporting a new product, our country and region will become the main supplier of colored sweet corn for other countries, since corn is consumed in food with great demand around the globe.
