As part of the “Reading Nation” project, active students of Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov visited the Karatal Historical and Local History Museum in the city of Ushtobe.
The student group was led by Bolat Seriyev, Vice Rector for Social Affairs and Youth Policy. During their visit, the students explored around 350 historical exhibits and learned about the past and present of Karatal District, as well as the life and creative legacy of Kemel Tokayev, an outstanding Kazakh writer and one of the pioneers of the detective genre.
A museum specialist introduced the students to Kemel Tokayev’s works, including The Final Blow, The Soldier Went to War, A Shot Fired at Night, The Incident in Sargaban, The Marked Gold, The Mysterious Trail, Special Assignment, The Flood, and The Assassination Attempt, highlighting the significance of the writer’s literary legacy and the educational value of his works.
The students viewed personal photographs of the writer and valuable materials related to his life and work. They also saw a replica of the desk and chair at which the writer worked, recreated based on a photograph published in a newspaper.
The students were warmly welcomed by Ulan Dosymbekov, Akim of Karatal District, who introduced them to the district’s current affairs and community life.
During the meeting, particular attention was paid to the importance of learning about local history, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering a strong interest in reading among young people.
“Reading broadens young people’s horizons, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the country’s history and national values. Today’s meeting encouraged students’ interest in books and gave them an opportunity to become more closely acquainted with the works of our fellow countryman, Kemel Tokayev,” said Vice Rector Bolat Seriyev.
The visit proved to be an enriching and educational experience for the students, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of their region’s history and the literary legacy of its distinguished native son.
