Processing of food (bio-waste) waste with the help of larvae of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) and production of feed protein

Project title:“Processing of food (bio-waste) waste with the help of larvae of the Black Soldier Fly  (Hermetia illucens) and production of feed protein” (project duration 12 months, 01.01.-31.12.-2022)

Urban waste management is considered one of the most urgent and serious environmental problems. The severity of this problem will increase in the future, given the rapid growth of the urban population. Due to the growing public pressure and environmental problems, it is necessary to develop more sustainable methods of handling household waste. This project is largely based on the experience of operating a plant for processing one ton of waste per day. The waste processed at the enterprise is mainly fruit and vegetable waste from the wholesale market. It should be understood that scaling to a larger object may require some adaptation or equipment configuration. However, we believe that the standard procedures described are applicable for a wide range of production scaling. The processing of organic waste (bio-waste) is still quite limited, especially in Kazakhstan, although it is by far the largest part of all municipal waste generated. This project examines urban organic municipal waste from households, commercial enterprises and institutions. It describes a fairly new, but at the same time practically proven approach to the transformation of biological waste by insect larvae on the example of the black lion fly (CHL), Hermetia illucens; an approach that has attracted a lot of attention in the last decade. Its popularity is associated with the promising possibilities of using collected CHL larvae as a source of feed protein for animals, which provides a valuable alternative to traditional feed.

Key characteristics make the technology an attractive option for processing bio-waste from the point of view of recycling tasks by food and agricultural enterprises. Let ‘s list them:

  • Waste biomass turns into larvae and vermicompost. Larvae consist of 35% protein and 30% crude fat. This insect protein is of high quality and is an important feed for poultry and fish farmers. Testing of feeds by foreign specialists has confirmed that this is a suitable alternative to the selected meal.
  • It has been shown that when waste is processed by Black Lion larvae, disease-carrying bacteria such as salmonella are inactivated in the waste. This means that the risk of disease transmission between animals and between animals and humans is reduced when using this technology at the farm level or when processing animal waste in general (for example, chicken manure or slaughterhouse waste).
  • Such treatment of organic waste can reduce the number of open landfills, which is still a sad reality.
  • Waste processed by larvae is called vermicompost. This compost-like substance contains nutrients and organic substances and, when used in agriculture, helps to reduce soil depletion.
  • Demonstrated a high degree of conversion of waste into biomass, up to 25% in terms of raw mass, which is a satisfactory solution from the point of view of technology and business.
  • There is no need for complex high-tech solutions to operate such an object. Thus, it is suitable for regions that rely mainly on simple technologies and unskilled labor.

The technological solution consists in feeding segregated bio-waste to larvae of the Black Lion Fly (CHL) grown in a nursery. Larvae grow on waste and reduce the mass of waste. At the end of the process, the larvae are collected and processed into suitable food for animals, birds and fish. The remaining waste will also be recycled and potentially used as a soil fertilizer.

Project goal: To study the full life cycle of the Hermetia illucens Black Lion fly, to collect statistical data on waste processing by the larvae of the Black Lion fly, to determine the potential and design capacity of this technology.

 Expected results:

  1. processing of organic waste – 150 tons
  2. growing a live larva – 50 tons
  3. production of dry larva – 10 tons
  4. production of protein-lipid concentrate – 2 tons
  5. production of fat – 2 tons
  6. production of vermicompost – 50 tons
  7. A certificate of copyright registration will be received.
  8. It is also planned to publish the work in domestic and foreign scientific journals.
