Project title: «Production of zoohumus with the help of larvae of the Black Soldier Fly» (the duration of the project is 12 months, 01.01.2023-30.12.2023.)

Relevance. Urban waste management is considered one of the most urgent and serious environmental problems. The severity of this problem will increase in the future, given the rapid growth of the urban population. Due to the growing public pressure and environmental problems, it is necessary to develop more sustainable methods of handling household waste. This project is largely based on the experience of operating a plant for processing one ton of waste per day. The waste processed at the enterprise is mainly fruit and vegetable waste from the wholesale market. It should be understood that scaling to a larger object may require some adaptation or configuration of equipment. However, we believe that the standard procedures described are applicable for a wide range of production scaling.

Novelty of the project: This project examines urban organic waste from households, commercial enterprises and institutions. It describes a fairly new approach to the transformation of biological waste by insect larvae using the example of the black lion fly (CHL), Hermetia illucens. Its popularity is associated with the promising possibilities of using CHL larvae as converters of waste into feed and organic soil fertilizer, zoohumus. Brief description of the project: The processing of organic waste (bio-waste) is still quite limited, especially in Kazakhstan, although it is by far the largest part of all municipal waste generated. This project examines urban organic municipal waste from households, commercial enterprises and institutions. It describes an approach to the transformation of biological waste by insect larvae using the example of the black lion fly (CHL), Hermetia illucens. Its popularity is associated with the promising possibilities of using collected larvae as a source of feed protein for animals, which provides a valuable alternative to traditional feed. Organic fertilizer is made from recycled waste and fly larvae – vermicompost, live larva, dried larva, fat and protein-lipid concentrate.

Project goal: To study the production of organic zoohumus fertilizer and determine the design capacity and potential of this technology for further use in the production of a related growth stimulant product.

Expected results:

  • The technology for the production of organic fertilizer of zoohumus will be studied and developed and the design capacity will be determined
  • The chemical composition and indicators of organic fertilizer will be studied
  • A patent for the technology and product certification will be obtained. Articles are published in the databases of KOKSNVO and RSCI.
