“Reading Nation”: students got acquainted with Shokan’s heritage

On October 2, 2026, students majoring in Computer Science at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics took part in an educational field trip as part of the “Reading Nation” project.

As part of the project, students were invited to read 15 selected works of fiction. Among them, they explored “Akkan Zhuldyz” (“The Shooting Star”), a novel by the prominent Kazakh writer S. Mukanov, which sparked their interest in the life and intellectual legacy of Shokan Ualikhanov, the renowned Kazakh scholar, traveller, ethnographer, and explorer.

With the aim of broadening students’ historical and cultural horizons, a special educational excursion was organized at the initiative of I. Yessengabylov, Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.

During the trip, the students visited the Shokan Ualikhanov Memorial Museum in Shokan Village, where they had an opportunity to explore the scholar’s personal belongings, manuscripts, and rare historical artefacts. The museum’s collection offered them a deeper insight into Ualikhanov’s life, scholarly pursuits, and the historical period in which he lived and worked.

The historical events and facts described in “Akkan Zhuldyz” acquired particular significance for the students as they encountered authentic artefacts and museum exhibits connected with the scholar’s life and legacy.

The educational journey continued at the Kerbulak District Library in the village of Saryozek.

The excursion became more than an extension of the students’ literary experience. It provided an opportunity to engage directly with the country’s historical and cultural heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation of literature, strengthening students’ interest in national history, and contributing to the development of a sustainable culture of reading and intellectual curiosity among young people.
