The head of the Department of History and Socio-humanitarian Disciplines is PhD in Philosophy Ishkalova Gulbanu Ismagulovna. The teaching staff fully corresponds to the staffing table.
In 2024, the department successfully passed the specialized accreditation in the specialty 6B01601 – “History” and 7M01601 – “History”.

The goal of the Department of History and Social-Humanitarian Disciplines for the specialties 6B01601 – “History”, 6B01602 – “History and Social Studies (IP)”, and 7M01601 – “History” (Master’s degree) is to prepare highly qualified and competitive bachelors and masters in education, who possess in-depth knowledge in the field of history, have an understanding of the innovative scientific and educational environment, and are equipped with high personal and professional competencies.
Material and technical security
Classes of students and undergraduates are held in specially equipped classrooms: №131, №132, №128, as well as in language labs and computer labs. Students and undergraduates are given the opportunity to collect material, analyze, exchange experience with university researchers, use bibliographic information on the basis of the scientific and practical center “Iliyastan” and the G.Ormanov Library.
The Department of History was one of the first departments of Zhetysu University. On March 31, 1973, the Department of Marxism-Leninism was opened at the Taldykorgan Pedagogical Institute, its first head was R.A. Solodilova, Candidate of Philological Sciences.
On August 24, 1977, the department was divided into two parts: the department of Philosophy and Political economy; Department of the CPSU and Scientific Communism. Specialists of History department were included in the second department.
Experienced teaching staff and journalists delivered lectures to students.
On March 18, 1991, the Department of the CPSU and Scientific Communism was renamed into the Department of Political History and Theory of Socialism, the head of the department was the candidate of Historical sciences Sadykov A.M.
Teachers Sadykov A.M., Tenizbayev U.A., Ordalieva S.U., Adilbekova R.K were at the origin of the Department of History, who continue to work at the university today. From 1993 to 1998 the Department of History was headed by the candidate of Historical sciences Slambekov Z.S.
In 1999-2005, the head of the department was Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Mukhatova O.Kh.
In 2006-2007, the department was headed by the candidate of Historical sciences Katenov A.K., in 2007-2009 - the candidate of historical sciences - Baigabatova N.K. Since September 1, 2009, the department is headed by the candidate of Historical sciences Bulanov Y.O.
Since September 1, 2021 the department has been renamed the educational program in the social and humanitarian direction under the leadership of A. Abdildanova.
Since September 1, 2024, G. Ishkalova has been appointed head of the Department of history and social and humanitarian disciplines.

The educational process is organized according to the credit technology of training. The educational and methodological complex of the specialty is 100% formed.
The educational program includes continuous professional practice throughout the entire period of study and ensures integration, close interaction with educational organizations on joint development, discussion and evaluation of the practice content. Professional practice is a mandatory component of the educational program of specialty 6B01601 – History. It is divided into educational, psychological and pedagogical and industrial (pedagogical). Practical training is necessary for students to acquire the skills of solving practical problems, ensuring the continuity of the educational and production process. Each type of practice is aimed at the formation of students’ professional competence. The total amount of all types of professional practices in the specialty 6B01601 – History is 25 credits.
Students undergo the following types of internships:
Educational practice (archaeological 2 credits);
Educational practice (museum and archive 2 credits);
Psychological and pedagogical (6 credits);
Production (pedagogical 10 credits);
Pre-graduate or industrial degree (5 credits).
The practice is carried out in accordance with the curriculum of the specialty, the terms of the internship are set in accordance with the schedule of the educational process. The goals and objectives, content and forms of reporting of students are determined for each type of practice by the internship program in accordance with the established procedure. Practice programs are available. Internships are conducted in third-party organizations in accordance with contracts concluded with these organizations of Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov, who have the necessary human resources, in accordance with the procedure provided for in the competence-oriented curriculum.
Pedagogical practice is a mandatory component of the educational program OP 6B01602 – History and Social Studies (IP). The program includes continuous professional practice throughout the entire study period and ensures integration and close collaboration with educational organizations for the joint development, discussion, and evaluation of the practice content. It is divided into educational, psychological-pedagogical, and production (pedagogical) practices. The completion of these practices is necessary for students to acquire the skills to solve practical problems and ensure the continuity of the educational and production processes. Each type of practice is aimed at forming the professional competencies of students. The total volume of all types of professional practice in the OP 6B01602 – History and Social Studies (IP) program is 29 credits. Students undergo the following types of practice:
- Psychological-pedagogical assessment (pedagogical practice 2 credits)
- Introduction to the teaching profession (pedagogical practice 2 credits)
- Pedagogical approaches (pedagogical practice 6 credits)
- Educational practice (archaeological 2 credits)
- Educational practice (museum-archival 2 credits)
- Research and innovations in education (pedagogical practice 15 credits).
Organizations whose statutory activities correspond to the profile of specialist training and the requirements of the modular educational program, which have qualified personnel to lead professional practice and the appropriate material and technical base, are defined as the basis for conducting professional practice for students. Since 2022, academic archaeological practice has been conducted jointly with the A.H. Margulan Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, at their training site in the settlement of Zhaipak in the Alakol district of the Almaty region. The bases for museum and archival practice are the regional Museum of Local Lore named after M.Tynyshpaeva and the city archive (Taldykorgan).
The basis of pedagogical practices are secondary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums of the city of Taldykorgan and the Zhetisu region. Zhetysu University named after Ilyas Zhansugurov has signed a Consortium with the Department of Education of Zhetisu region, according to which all educational institutions of the region can be bases for internship. So, in the 2022-2023 academic year, students of the TK411 group completed professional practice in schools in Taldykorgan.On the basis of KSU “Secondary school-gymnasium No. 5 named after M. Lomonosov” established branch 6B01601 – History of the Higher School of Humanities, providing high-quality teacher training. KGI “Secondary school-gymnasium No. 19 named after M.Zhumabayev with a preschool mini-center” GI “Department of Education for the city of Taldykorgan of the Department of Education of the Zhetisu region”.
Department of History and Social and Humanitarian Disciplines closely cooperates with the institutions-employers. On December 20, 2024, at the literary and educational evening “Ulttyk muratgan uly tulgan uly tulgan – Mukhamedzhan”, organized by the secondary school-gymnasium No. 19 named after M. Zhumabayev in Taldykorgan, head of the Department of History and Socio-humanitarian Disciplines, PhD G. I. Ishkalova made a presentation on the topic: “the historical heritage of M. During the course of pedagogical practice, students carry out various educational activities. For example, on February 19, 2025, students of TK 311, TK 111 OP 6B01601- “History”, 6B01602- “History and Social Studies” (IP) held an event dedicated to the 36th anniversary of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. In order to familiarize students with regulatory documents, programs and updates in secondary education, training seminars are held. On November 28, 2024, students of 3-4 courses of EP 6B01601-“History” took part in a “Training seminar for university graduates” organized by the Methodological Center of the Department of Education of the Zhetisu region. Methodologist of the regional Methodological center Auezova Asel Askarovna and history teacher of secondary school № 6 named after A. Makarenko, teacher-researcher Turlybayeva Zhazira Nurgalievna acquainted students with normative documents, programs, lesson plans for secondary education and the digital educational platform for schools “Bilim Class”. Professional practice is determined by the working plans of educational programs and working programs for practice. The working School program will be held by the dean of the highest schools within 3 years. The program of professional practice is developed by the head of the corresponding educational programs according to the educational programs and their compliance with the profile of educational programs, a specific type of practice, professional standards and educational program, characteristics of the organization’s activities, technological process and practice at the facility. At the same time, organizational work is carried out and familiarization with the leadership base of practitioners. During the academic work, the student-trainee meets the questions of experienced teachers, master classes, seminars and previous weeks. At the same time, the student will conduct a visiting hour according to the plan of the event of visiting classes or schools. In PhD classes, lecturer-teacher Ishkalova G.I. actively uses the Padlet, kahoot, Goole Forms platform: PhD Santayeva K. Improving the quality of the disciplines taught in the educational program is associated with their methodological support. The use of innovative technologies in teaching is associated with the development of students’ communicative competence.
Students are provided with the UMKD in all disciplines of the educational program and the necessary methodological materials formed in Kazakh, Russian and English. All teaching materials, guidelines for practical classes, electronic lecture courses, electronic textbooks, test tasks are available in the university’s Intranet system, to which students have free access.
In order to develop the educational and methodological activities of students, expanding knowledge, enriching practical experience and inspiring new academic achievements, leadership lectures are systematically conducted. On February 14, 2025, the Department of History and Social and Humanitarian Disciplines of the Faculty of Humanities of Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov organized a leadership lecture with the participation of the head of the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Museology of the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi, PhD Rinat Serikovich Zhumatayev. The topic of the lecture was devoted to current issues of Kazakhstan archeology.
On February 27, 2025, a master class on “Modeling the educational process using STEM, CLIL and artificial intelligence technologies” was held at the university. Teacher – lecturer, Ph.D. philos. S.K. Rakhipova demonstrated the simulation of the educational process using AI on the topic “Education, Science, technology and technology.”
The teacher is a lecturer. PhD B.T. Kalieva modeling the educational process using STEM technology on the topic “application of STEM technology in history teaching”.
The topics of theses and their content correspond to the directions of scientific research conducted on the educational program. The graduation papers consider topical issues of the methodology of teaching history, as well as some works devoted to the study of solutions of modern scientific approaches in the study of the history of Kazakhstan.
The heads of theses are candidates of sciences and experienced teachers-lecturers of the educational program. The review of theses is given by experienced specialists in the field of education.
In accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 152 dated 04/20/2011 “On approval of the Rules for the organization of the educational process on credit technology of education” and amendments dated October 12, 2018 for No. 563, group advisors were approved for the OP. Group advisors carry out explanatory work when choosing elective disciplines, drawing up individual curricula of students, and also perform a guiding function for the educational program.
The degree of the educational program is 54,5%.

- b) the activity of teaching staff in research and innovation activities
The faculty of the department actively participates in research and innovation activities and their effectiveness is the main indicator of the quality of educational potential.
In order to improve the scientific level of teaching staff, work is carried out in the following areas: expanding research and innovation activities through participation in competitions and scientific conferences of various levels; ensuring the implementation of research results in production, the educational process; establishing creative contacts with scientists from leading universities and research centers of the republic, educational institutions of neighboring countries and their outstanding scientists; ensuring the active participation of students in research work.
Every year, a winter school is held at the university for teaching staff in order to develop the pedagogical competence of teachers necessary for professional activity, during which teachers exchange methodological work experience. In January 2023, a methodological seminar of the winter school on the following issues: “Okytu men okytudyn zamanaui bilim beru adisteri”, “Zamanaui okytu technologiyasyn paydalanu negizinde bilim alushylardyn functionaldyk sauattylygyn damit”, “Problematic interview as a hypothesis testing tool (master class)”. At the invitation of the OP SGN, teachers-historians Zhumabayeva B.N., Otarkozha M. of the Abai State University No. 1 shared their experience at the seminar on the topic “Bilim alushylardyn tarikhi oylau dagdylaryn kalyptastrudagi belsendi adis-tasilder”.

In October 2020, the Department of History organized and held an international scientific and practical conference “Altyn Orda – the basis of Kazakh statehood”, dedicated to the 750th anniversary of the state of Altyn Orda.
On October 11, 2024, an intra-university competition «Jas galym» was held at the Ilyas Zhansugurov Zhetysu University to finance projects to commercialize the results of scientific and scientific-technical activities of young scientists. 21 applications were submitted for the competition, and according to the results of the evaluation of the commission, 8 projects became winners. Among them, the winners were teachers from the Department of History and Social Sciences and Humanities of the Faculty of Humanities. The methodological group of the department in the 2024-2025 academic year organized methodological seminars on the following topics: Candidate of Historical Sciences Katenov A.K. “Подготовка рабочих кадров черной металлургии Казахстана 1959-1970 годы”, Tursynbaev O.G. «1941-1960 жылдардағы қазақ бастауыш мектептерінде білім беру мазмұны». During the seminars, the teachers took an active part in the discussion of the issues.
The teacher-lecturer, PhD Ishkalova G.I., in accordance with the topic of scientific research, prepared a video material “Patsha-zholbarys”, which is used in the process of studying the disciplines “History of Kazakhstan”, “Kazakhstann zhana zhane kazirgi zaman tarikhy”, “History of Zhetysu”, “Historical local lore”, but was also introduced into the work of historical-the Museum of Antiquity named after M. Tynyshpayev of the Zhetisu region and is used during the tour.
Teachers are constantly improving and improving their courses and teaching methods. Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Baigabatova N.K. prepared the course “Anthropology of Personality“ and, accordingly, for this course, Dr. Joseph Priestley (researcher at the Department of Social Anthropology of Mongolia and Inner Asia and the University of Cambridge, 10/18/2023.) conducted an online seminar on “Migration in Central Asia and methods of its research.“

In order to implement the national project “Ulttyk rukhani zhangyru” in August 2022, a Summer school for teachers, postdoctoral students and students of the University of Zurich (Switzerland) was organized at Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov. As part of the Summer School, foreign students took 2-week intensive Kazakh language courses. According to the special project “Tugan Zher”, the director of the scientific and educational center “Rukhani zhangyru”, Ph.D. Baigabatova N.K. gave a lecture on “Zhetysu: the Land of Seven Rivers” for guests from the University of Zurich. Along with this, an excursion to the M. Tynyshpaev Regional Museum of Local Lore was organized for teachers and students of the University of Zurich. During the events, foreign guests got acquainted with the nature, history of the Zhetysu region, artifacts of the culture of the Kazakh people.
Within the framework of international cooperation, together with the University of Zurich, the Eurasian Research Center was established at the university, the purpose of which is to train personnel, undergo internships and internships, exchange teachers and students within the framework of academic mobility, organize and conduct joint scientific research.
Teachers actively participate in various events held within the framework of important dates in the history of Kazakhstan. Candidate of Historical Sciences Bulanov E.O. made a scientific report on the topic “The rule of the descendants of Juchikhan” at the round table “The role of the Juchi Ulus in the history of the Kazakh Khanate”, organized by the Almaty Regional Museum of Local Lore.Tynyshpaeva.

The teachers of department implement the developed training courses created on the basis of their own research papers. For example, the lecturer–teacher, PhD Santayeva K.T., reads the elective course “Kazakstandagi uzymdastyru“, PhD, associate professor Baigabatova N.K. – “Anthropology of identity“, PhD, associate professor Tleubekova G.B. – “Kazakstandagi konystandyru sayasaty“.
Under the guidance of Ph.D., Associate Professor N.K.Baigabatova, a collective monograph “Ethnocultural identity of the Diaspora: ideas and practices (on the example of the Kazakhs of Mongolia and China)“ was published, which is widely used in the educational process in OP–History.
The textbook “Kazakhstan zhana zaman tarikhy” (authors: Abdildinova L.B., Santaeva K.T.) is used when reading the discipline “New History of Kazakhstan”, the textbook “Kosaly tarikhy pander” (co-authorship: Abdildinova L.B., Kasymova N.B., Tolamisov A.G.) developed for the discipline of the same name.
When reading the discipline “New and modern history of Asian and African countries”, the textbook “Asia zhane Africa elderin zhana zhane kazirgi zaman tarikhy” is used by the authors Nurlanova G.N., Karataeva D.G., Tursynbayev O.G.
The monograph “Kazakhs of Zhetysu at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries (historical and ethnographic research)” prepared by a team of authors in collaboration with Ph.D., Associate professor (associate professor) N.K. Baigabatova is used in the process of studying the discipline “History of Zhetysu”.
The teacher of the Department of history and social and humanitarian disciplines K. I. N., Santaeva K. T. prepared and published a monograph “The history of the collapse of the Kazakh traditional economy. – Taldykorgan”, 2024.the published monograph is used in the process of studying the discipline”collectivization in Kazakhstan”.
PhD, lecturer Bulanov E.O. has developed a massive online course “Kazakhstan ortagasyrlar tarikhy” and is used in the process of studying the disciplines of the OOD “Kazakhstan Tarikhy” and the database “Medieval history of Kazakhstan”. Also prepared by teachers-lecturers Kalieva B.T., Karataeva D.G. – “Tarikhi olketanu pani boyynsha Sarkan audanyn kieli zherleri” (No. 34017 dated 03/28/2023) is used in the study of the discipline “Zhetisu tarikhy” and “Tarikhi olketanu”.
The teacher-lecturer, PhD Ishkalova G.I. prepared the map “XIX gasyrdyn ayagi-XX gasyrdyn basyndagi Kazakhstanyn anshylyk alkaptary” (No. 33070 dated 02/27/2023). This map is used during the study of the disciplines “History of Zhetysu”, “Historical local lore”, “New History of Kazakhstan”, “New and modern history of Kazakhstan” and the general course “History of Kazakhstan”.
Every year, students of the educational program take an active part in all events held within the framework of the university, higher school, educational program. All events are focused on the development of aesthetic, patriotic, spiritual and moral, legal and intellectual and creative education. Students of the educational program hold all kinds of concerts, themed evenings, debates, contests, round tables and other types of active activities.
The educational work of the educational program is carried out in five directions:
- Formation of political education of students;
- Problems of interethnic relations;
- Prevention of youth crime;
- Introducing young people to universal and spiritual values;
- Education of patriotism.
The purpose of the event is to identify talented students, support their creative activities, as well as spend their leisure time usefully.
Students of the educational program are interested in all types of activities of the educational program, higher school, university, city and are involved in all areas of educational, academic, socio-educational and research processes.
Students participate in such cultural events as landscaping of the university grounds, clean-up days, organization of charity concerts for children of the Ainalayyn orphanage, etc.
Every year among students of the specialty “History” there is a subject Olympiad in History, the program of which includes brain-ring games, test questions and defense of scientific projects.
Students of the educational program “History” in the summer undergo archaeological practice as part of republican expeditions led by famous archaeologists in Kazakhstan.
Within the framework of the Agreement between the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies of the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and the Higher School of Humanities of the ZHU named after I.Zhansugurov, from June 20 to July 15, 2018, 3rd-year students of the University of Zurich Alena Helbling and Anita Weilenmann completed an internship to conduct ethnographic research in the Taldykorgan region.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, students Tanysbekova Madina from Kostanay State Pedagogical University and Nusipova Tolkyn from East Kazakhstan State University studied in the TK-211 group in the 4th semester, and Kudaibergen Ayym from Arkalyk Pedagogical University named after Y. studied in the TK-311 group.Altynsarina.
In order to implement the program “Attracting foreign specialists to teaching”, from September 27 to November 17, 2018, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), associate Professor of Sancak Finke Meltem (Zurich, Switzerland) conducted classes for students of the specialty 5B011400 – “History” (bachelor’s degree) in the course “History of Asian and African countries in the Middle Ages”, undergraduates of specialty 6M011400 – “History” in the course “Theoretical and methodological problems of ethnology”.
In order to implement the external academic mobility of students to study in one academic semester (1 semester) of the 2019-2020 academic year, in the period from 02.09.2019 to 12/14/2019, a student from the University named after Niide Omer Halisdemir (Republic of Turkey) Gunaydin Fadlula studied in the TK-311 group.
Also, to study in one academic semester (2nd semester) of the 2019-2020 academic year, a student of the Taraz State Pedagogical University, Asym Aykyn Aydynuly, studied in the IR-211 group.

Baigabatova and the MNS of the Rukhani Zhangyru Scientific and Educational Center A.B.Kashaganova, who is a graduate of the OP (Bachelor’s degree 2017, Master’s degree 2019), completed a 2-month internship in the period from March 01 to April 30, 2023 in Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies of the University (Switzerland)

The speakers were Professor Peter Finke, Doctor of the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies at the University of Zurich, and Dr. Meltem Sanjak (Switzerland). The lecture reviewed the results of the speakers’ research on transformational processes in a comparative analysis of three countries, such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia, over the past 30 years of independence.

Since January 2023, Candidate of Historical Sciences lecturer Bulanov E.O. has been a participant in the project No. 304/23-25 “Humanitarian ghylymdar damu processegi Iliyas Zhansugirov murasy: XXI gasyr contextinde” implemented by the ZHU named after I. Zhansugurov within the framework of grant financing of scientific research of the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2023-2025). Within the framework of this project, from 01.10- 07.10.2023. Candidate of Historical Sciences, lecturer Bulanov E.O. was on a business trip to Tashkent to work with the rare fund of archival documents in the “State Archive of the city of Tashkent”, “Central State Archive of the Republic of Uzbekistan” and “National Library of Uzbekistan named after A.Navoi”.
Associate Professor, Candidate of Historical Sciences Baigabatova N.K. and manager of the Office of Scientific Projects Kashaganova A. from 01.11-31.12.2024 completed a two-month scientific internship at Lund University of the Kingdom of Sweden.
From 02 to 11 April 2025, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor N.K. Baigabatova and Head of the Department of History and SGD, PhD G.I. Ishkalova conducted a scientific trip to Almaty within the framework of the scientific project of programme-target financing of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan ‘Modern challenges in the regulation of land relations: historical and legal analysis’ (2024-2026, IRN BR24993047).
As part of the grant funding provided by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the project titled “The Legacy of Ilyas Zhansugurov in the Development of the Humanities: In the Context of the 21st Century” (2023–2025, IRN AP19680053), Lecturer of the Department of History and Socio-Humanitarian Disciplines, Candidate of Historical Sciences Y.O. Bulanov undertook the research trip to the city of Almaty from April 8 to 12, 2025.

By the Order of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on July 3, N.K. Baigabatova was awarded with the medal "Kazakhstan khalky Assemblyyasy 25 zhyl".
Abdildinova L.B. was awarded with the badge "Academy of the best scientists".
From the annual Spartakiad the head of the department, Bulanov Y.O., candidate of historical sciences, took the second place.
2020 "YEAR OF THE VOLANTER", STUDENT OF THE FOURTH YEAR COURSE JUMABEK YERKEBULAN, RECOGNIZED THE MOST ACTIVE VOLANTEER

In September 2023, teacher-lecturer of the EP on social and humanitarian disciplines Ishkalova G.I. defended her dissertation on the topic "Traditional hunting of the Kazakh people: historical and ethnological research (XVIII - early twentieth centuries)" for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the educational program "8D02205 - Archaeology and Ethnology".

In June 2024, B. T. Kaliyeva, a teacher-lecturer at the Department of History and social and humanitarian disciplines, defended her dissertation at the dissertation council of the Abai KazNPU to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the educational program «6D011400 - History» on the topic «Commemorative practices and the role of memory in teaching history in schools at the end of the ХХ-th - beginning of the ХХІ-st century (based on materials from the Almaty region)».
